Jimmy Chickenpants (wrap-up)

By Greg Pool
Host, TreeHouseConcerts.org

Here's a wrap-up of Jimmy Chickenpants' visit to the Tree House (pictures of that night):
  • This was the first concert that I booked without having heard any of the artist's work. The 30+ folks that showed up really impressed me, because I wouldn't have thought anyone would come just on my recommendation alone. Thanks for the trust!

  • Fortunately, KPIG DJ Arden Eaton let me know I did the right thing when she wrote in an email: "Gotta be there for those Chickenpants boys, they are so awesome!"

  • The one thing JC and I have in common in the twice annual Strawberry Music Festival, and that's where I first met Ken Clarkson, the banjo player. After missing last Fall's because of my daughter's birth, we'll be skipping Spring to return this Fall. And now I have five more reasons to stay up late and play music!

  • As he left, I had one guest ask if the music Jimmy Chickenpants played was bluegrass. Technically, we only heard some bluegrass tonight. We also heard blues, folk, jazz, gypsy guitar, and even some surf rock. Nevertheless, I answered, "Yes, that was bluegrass." He proclaimed, "I like bluegrass!" Hey, my work is done here.

  • Banjo player Ken Clarkson lived on the Big Island of Hawaii for four years in 1991, just overlapping my time there, but we never met. I was a geologist at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and he was a biologist in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Good times.

  • During the aftershow interview, Ken Clarkson mentioned he was in the Hawaiian bluegrass band, The Voggy Mountain Ramblers. Vog is volcanic smog related to the continuous eruption from Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii.

  • Guitarist Rob Clayton first learned of bluegrass while in England when he first heard an LP album of bluegrass guitar legend, Tony Rice.

  • Mandolin player Hide Kawatsure was in a bluegrass band in college in Japan.

  • Jim Davies' bass was only the second time we've had such a big instrument in the Tree House. Mark Whittington played one when the band Camp Danger opened for Sherry Austin.

  • Besides having a super voice, Joni Matthews also let us know she's engaged...to Jim!

  • When they all sat down to sign one of the 24 chairs we use for the audience, the band smartly chose one of the chairs that had received a dent over the years. Like a dolt, I encouraged them to sign a smooth one, but as you can see in the picture to the right they found a very creative way to incorporate the dent into their worldwide message of hope and love (see full chair).

  • During sound check, JC performed the Kate Wolf song, "Here in California." Juliet excitedly held up the phone for her Mom back in Napa County, who's a big Kate Wolf fan. And although she passed away in 1986, Kate will always be on our Wish List.
