WORTHY: KT Tunstall

KT Tunstall is Tree House Worthy.

I don't usually buy music unless I see the band live or if they fulfill my Rule of Three: If I hear about the music from three independent sources, then I'll buy it.

I first heard of KT Tunstall on the NPR podcast of World Cafe (2/13/2006 - link). I then saw KT's album reviewed in Paste Magazine (#20 Feb/Mar 2006). And finally, good friend Jenny de la Hoz told me she heard about KT on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday (2/4/06 - link). That's when I bought KT's album, Eye On The Telescope on iTunes (link).

UNIQUE LOOPING
Here's what I like about KT. She writes and arranges her own stuff. She's smart and articulate. And she stands out immediately with her ability to create more sound than just her and her guitar.

Give her a listen, but do check out her videos under ALBUM on her website, especially the live version of and "Black Horse & the Cherry Tree." Her ability to loop a lot of sounds, like voice and rhythm, makes a very cool presentation. And don't be suprised if I obtain some of that equipment in the near future!

The technique is not that novel. There's a lot of musicians who play these tricks, like Joe Craven, but KT is something special in her folk-pop sound. It's probably because, unlike the rest of us, she didn't listen to a lot of music growing up, and it's lead to a very unique sound.
